Hijab/Her  I

Hijab. Screen. Curtain. Partition. Aurat. Modesty. Concealment. Coverage. Cloth.

"Hijab/Her" explores the varying relationships between the woman and her hijab. The hijab is a piece of cloth that shrouds her head, used as a way of concealing the aurat of the Muslim woman: areas on her body, which should be covered from view, as required in Islam. Based on the stories of different women who don the hijab, this series presents the hijab as a site of discourse, articulated in relation to her place in society, her body, and her inner self.

“I miss having the wind in my hair. I would much rather read a book than cook. I like to wear sexy lingerie, but I cannot show it. I sometimes feel invisible. I often feel overwhelmed by representations of us, good or bad. I have been called a ‘terrorist’ before. I am not a ‘minah tudong’. I exist. “

Hijab/Her   II

“Skin” is a continuation of the “Hijab/Her” series, a photographic investigation of the diverse meanings of the hijab, embedded alongside experiences of the women who don it: the Muslimah. This new series focuses on the concept of aurat – modesty, coverage – a religious doctrine that is integral in the act of Hijab. Like skin on the body, the hijab serves to cover the aurat of the Muslimah, not only in terms of the bodily, but also through guidance: in her actions and spirituality. “Skin” will explore the various adaptations of ‘skin’ worn, as perceived socially, politically, and ideologically.

Hijab/Her   III

The visual persona of the hijab is one that is often embodied onto the female Muslim body. This series attempts to remove the body and highlight the materiality of the hijab, focusing on the objects and forms that shape the way in the hijab is manifested, when the 'her' is removed.
